In Choborzany, a remote village which is the setting for Stefan Żeromski’s novel Popioly (Ashes), one of the major works of Polish literature, there are still people who remember the author’s visits to the area. Krzysztof Kieślowski explores what the villagers know and remember about Zeromski (1864-1925) and talks to the local high school kids about how they view Stefan Zeromski’s work. These brief, uncertain, scattered thoughts and opinions all come together to illustrate the ways in which the artist is present in people’s minds.
