By the end of the XIX century, Poland did not exist on the maps,
partitioned by three neighbouring empires. Despite this, a surprisingly large
number of the pioneers of the Cinema industry and Hollywood’s founders came
from this part of the world, many of them with Jewish origins. Samuel Goldwyn,
co-founder of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was born in Warsaw as Szmul Gelbfisz. The
Warner Bros was founded by the Wonsal brothers from Maków Mazowiecki (north of
Warsaw). The Academy Award record holder with 6 wins, the director Billy Wilder
was born near Krakow as Samuel Wilder. Richard Boleslawski, director of movies
starring Marlena Dietrich, Greta Garbo or Clark Gable, also came from Poland.
They created during the early days of cinema. This documentary presents the
pioneers and the stars of the silent film in Poland with an abundance of
classic archive footage.
