The film is a journey to the
south of Italy in the footsteps of one of the greatest Polish writers of the
20th century, Gustaw Herling-Grudziński, who, in his twenties, escaped from a
Soviet gulag and made his way to the south of Italy with the Anders’ Army. It
is here, in Sorrento, where the young writer meets his master, the great
Italian philosopher and literary critic Benedetto Croce, and marries Lidia, one
of the philosopher’s daughters. The film reveals an intimate portrait of the
writer through the eyes of his daughter, Marta Herling, and his closest
friends, who show the viewers around Naples, the city that for many years had
been influencing the writer.
