They give birth to children who are not their own and get thousands of dollars for carrying a pregnancy. Their clients are mostly foreigners like Americans, Swedes or Chinese. In return, they can buy a house or send their children to a good school, which is why they openly call it work. To some people, these women are nothing more than a “baby factory” for the world. According to statistics, Ukrainian surrogate mothers give birth to about 4,000 babies a year. The first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic exposed the scale of the commercial baby business in Ukraine when a video from a clinic in Kiev went viral. It showed dozens of babies born by surrogates. The newborns were left stranded after Ukraine closed its borders to foreign travellers due to coronavirus lockdown and their biological parents could not collect them. The film shows the reasons for commercial surrogacy and the controversy around it. It answers the question why Ukraine has become the “Mecca” of surrogate mothers for foreign couples.
